Footpaths of Cefn Mawr

The Footpaths of Cefn Mawr initiative focused on identifying, mapping and activating a network of historic and existing walking routes through the village and surrounding landscape. These footpaths connect key heritage sites, including former industrial areas, tramways, quarries and links to the canal, revealing a rich but often overlooked layer of the World Heritage Site.

Through temporary signage, trails and interpretation, the project encouraged people to explore Cefn Mawr on foot, uncovering hidden routes and stories embedded within the landscape. It helped make visible the scale and significance of the area’s industrial heritage, while also improving accessibility and awareness of how the village connects physically and historically to neighbouring communities.

The initiative also supported local priorities by promoting walking for wellbeing and creating opportunities for more circular routes, addressing gaps in connectivity and access. By activating these footpaths, the project demonstrated Cefn Mawr’s potential as an important destination within the wider World Heritage Site, rather than a place that is passed through or overlooked.
