Quirky Chirky

  • Location: Chirk Parish Hall (map)

Chirk based artist Tanoren will present her heritage-focussed work ‘Quirky Chirky’ at the Parish Hall by inviting ‘Chirkers’ to share stories and memories of the town’s most iconic landmarks, from St Mary’s Church to the old Milk Bar, the cenotaph, the Aqueduct and viaduct. Quirky Chirky is part social sculpture and social history, and began as a hand-painted collage. Each building has been drawn on watercolour paper, carefully painted, cut out, and arranged on a large board without roads, so the focus is on the places themselves.

Tanoren’s artwork is a living map, a celebration of the everyday, the ordinary and the extraordinary community spirit in the town’s history. ‘Football at the 3AAA’s to pints at the Stanton, bats in your hair in Chirk canal tunnel, Chicken curry from Mrs Lee’s to ya munna say dunna it tinner polite, ya canna say that - cos that inna right!’
